The effect of live ewe weight at mating on some reproduction traits in Konya merino sheep

Özet
Effect of the live weight of ewes at mating on some reproductive traits was investigated in Konya Merino sheep. The ewes were allocated to six live weight categories: less than 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64 and over 65 kg. The least-squares means of conception rate, fertility and weaning weight were found as 88.7 ± 0.025, 84.9 ± 0.029% and 19.75 ± 0.407 kg, respectively, and they were not influenced by live weight of ewes. In contrast, litter size, fecundity and litter weight at birth of lambs were affected by live weight of ewes at mating. For 60-64 and over 65 kg live weight category, the litter sizes (1.57 ± 0.081 and 1.45 ± 0.092, respectively) were higher than the other categories (p<0.01). The fecundity and lambs litter weight were higher in the > 65 kg ewes (127.2 ± 0.149% and 5.58 ± 0.293 kg) than the others.
