A group of black figure lekythos from karaman museum

Olba · Ocak 2011

Özet
There are six black figured, shoulder lekythoi in The Collection of Classical Hall in Karaman Archaelogical Museum. The main subjects of this study are the dating of these black figured shoulder lekythoi according to their forms and stylistic features and identifying the workshop that the lekythoi processed, the artist or the region of art that this artist belonged to. The second rate goal of this study is to find the probable place of origin or the centers of these lekythoi. Unfortunately, the museum records cannot help us to find the exact place of origin and centers of these lekythoi, since all of them were brought in the collection by buying. Nevertheless, just probabilities are going to be considered about this subject in the light of the findings that have come out in the recent scientific excavations and near museum collections. Lekythos was a popular form which was used as cosmetics and oinment container in the Greek world until it gives its place to Unguentariums which were used for the same purposes. Lekythos that was also used as an important grave gift was produced in large amounts in Attica especially in Arcaic and Classical periods. n the last quarter of 6th century B.C. 'Black Figured Technique' left its place to 'Red Figured Technique' which is technically more functional. However, until the mid 5th century B.C., the masters such as Edinburgh Painter, Haimon Paintert, Beldam Painter and lekythoi which were processed in 'Black Figure Technique' in their workshops kept being popular some more time. All of the lekythos that are exhibited in Karaman Museum are in the form of Shoulder Lekythos standart type which started to be seen in the second quarter of 6th century B.C. Karaman Lekythoi are considered in Type II secondary shape group with their sizes. They also attract notice with their poor quality style features, careless and second class ornaments. The Karaman lekythoi are dated to the last years of 6th century B.C. and the first half of the 5th century B.C. with their stylistic features. Karaman Museum Lekythoi are examined in three groups in this study according to their body ornaments; Figure Ornamented (no 1-2), Ivy- Palmette Ornamented (no 3-4) and Black Body (no 5-6) Lekythos. Figured Lekythoi in Karaman are examined in a substyle scope related to the workshops which worked as part of 'The Cock Group' and 'Haimon Group' or Style which these lekythos also belong to. Six black figured, shoulder lekythoi in the Collection of Classical Pieces exi-bited in Karaman Archaeology Museum are related to Southwest Anatolia (Iasos) and Cilicia Region (Kelenderis?) coastal cities according to the museum records and recent excavation findings.
