The impact of trauma-informed sports-based intervention on emotion regulation, self-esteem, and peer relationships in adolescents with substance use disorder: A randomized controlled trial

Children and Youth Services Review · Eylül 2026

Özet
This study aims to investigate how a trauma-informed sports-based intervention influences emotion regulation, self-esteem, and peer relationships among adolescents struggling with substance use disorder. Employing a randomized controlled experimental design, participants were assigned to either an intervention or a control group. While the intervention group took part in a sports-based program structured around trauma-informed principles over a set period, the control group continued with routine care. The findings indicate that adolescents in the intervention group showed statistically significant improvements in their emotion regulation skills, self-esteem, and peer dynamics compared to those in the control group. These results suggest that when sports-based practices are integrated with a trauma-sensitive approach, they enhance not only behavioral outcomes but also the broader psychosocial functioning of adolescents. Conclusion, trauma-informed sports-based interventions serve as an effective and holistic approach to fostering emotional and social growth in adolescents with substance use disorder. Integrating such programs into mental health services has the potential to bolster the recovery process and improve the psychosocial adaptation of these young individuals.
