COUNTERTENOR VOCAL PEDAGOGY IN TURKEY: A QUALITATIVE STUDY BASED ON EXPERT OPINIONS

The countertenor voice is a highly distinctive vocal type that combines the physical endurance of the male voice with the elegance and technical flexibility traditionally associated with the female voice. Historically, the countertenor emerged as a vocal category that replaced the castrato tradition and has since played an indispensable role in the stylistically authentic performance of Baroque vocal repertoire. While academic research and pedagogical approaches to countertenor training have a well-established tradition in Europe, educational materials and scholarly literature in this field remain limited in contemporary Türkiye. This deficiency restricts vocal educators’ and students’ access to up-to-date technical knowledge, scientific practices, and pedagogical methods related to the countertenor vocal mechanism. This study aims to examine the current state of countertenor voice training in Türkiye and to identify existing pedagogical, institutional, and academic gaps within a scientific framework. Within the scope of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with experienced voice pedagogy specialists working in Türkiye. Through these interviews, educational approaches, technical challenges, and institutional needs related to countertenor training were analyzed. Based on the findings, the study offers a comprehensive evaluation of the field and presents recommendations to support the development of countertenor voice education in Türkiye.
