This section delves into congenital structural defects affecting the brain and medulla spinalis. These anomalies illustrate the wide range of developmental brain disorders, which frequently share similar clinical characteristics. They often engage overlapping molecular pathways and may involve the same genes associated with more common conditions, including intellectual disability, early-life epilepsy, and autism. Over recent decades, substantial advancements have been made in understanding brain malformations, underlining their significant role in the broader context of neurological disorders. Brain malformations primarily arise from disruptions during the initial phases of brain development. They represent essential elements of embryology and the developmental genetics of the nervous system. Investigating these malformations offers valuable insights into typical brain development and the genetic mechanisms that govern brain formation and function. Brain malformations often coexist with other developmental brain disorders, which may or may not exhibit identifiable structural anomalies. These malformations can lead to a wide array of functional impairments, such as intellectual disabilities, developmental language disorders, epilepsy, social and behavioral challenges, specific learning disabilities, attention deficits, and motor deficits associated with abnormal muscle tone and posture or dyskinesias. As such, it is essential for clinicians, researchers, and medical professionals to integrate this understanding into their approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and research of neurological disorders in children.
