A GLOBAL MEDIA FRAMING OF THE 2023 TURKISH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Journal of Mediterranean Studies · Ocak 2024
Özet
This study aims to analyse the global media framing of the 2023 Türkiye presidential election. To achieve the stated objective, the investigation used framing theory, specifically because of its potential to examine the relationship between news and ideologies. Accordingly, the methodology adopted comprised a library study, which included sourcing news articles from the New York Times, Reuters, and Al Jazeera published during May 2023. The collected articles were subsequently processed using NVivo 12 Plus, adopting sentiment analysis with three indicators: negative, positive, and neutral. The obtained results showed distinct differences in media framing among the sources. For example, the New York Times and Reuters predominantly portrayed Türkiye and Erdogan negatively, while Al Jazeera’s framing was mostly neutral. Based on this observation, framing by these global media outlets was inferred to be primarily influenced by their respective ideologies and political interests.
