Özet
Climate change events, such as more severe droughts and floods, have forced farmers to adapt by altering their traditional cropping patterns and implementing new techniques like soilless culture to sustain agriculture. Soilless culture, as an innovative and intensified plant production technology, can effectively mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on plants by minimizing the negative impacts of environmental stressors when precisely established. This study was conducted to develop a new vertical training system for soilless table grape production and to scrutinize the effects of different training systems on the physiology and agronomy of globally popular table grapes. Seven-year-old grafted vines of ‘Alphonse Lavallée,’ ‘Crimson Seedless,’ and ‘Italia’ (Vitis vinifera L.) table grapes cultivated in solid (peat and perlite mixture) soilless culture established within a climate-controlled Venlo glasshouse of Selcuk University, Turkey, were subjected to three different training systems; 1) bilateral cordon training (BCT), as a globally common type; 2) two-floor vertical training (TVT); and 3) vertical trunk training (VTT). Vine physiology traits, such as stomatal conductance, leaf temperature, and chlorophyll content, were not altered by the training systems. In ‘Alphonse Lavallée’ and ‘Crimson Seedless’ cultivars, the highest leaf fresh and dry weights were obtained from TVT. Besides, the berry detachment force of ‘Alphonse Lavallée’ and ‘Italia’ and the skin rupture force of ‘Crimson Seedless’ and ‘Italia’ were markedly higher for TVT than for others and, therefore, grape growers should consider the positive effect of the TVT system when storage and/or transportation is required after harvest. While TVT also resulted in the highest grape yield per vine for all cultivars, VTT provided early berry ripening with the greatest soluble solid content values. To sum up, TVT was a better training system for many agronomic features and for efficient use of the soilless area, while VTT was pioneering for early ripening.
